Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy is an anthology of short stories or novels that delve deeper into the Dark World. It follows Simon’s time at Shadowhunter Academy but is rife with fascinating extras. Overall, this is a highly entertaining installment in The Chronicles of Shadowhunters and I definitely recommend reading it before the Dark Artifacts series. Please don’t read this review if you haven’t read the Hell Devices or Mortal Instruments series as there will be plot points covered.

The first novel is Welcome to the Shadowhunter Academy, where Simon decides that he wants to be a Shadowhunter. After losing his memories, Simon must decide who he wants to be – a mortal who doesn’t remember the Dark World or a future Shadowhunter who might regain some of his memories. He meets a group of students, both Shadowhunters and regulars who will be with him for the next two years as they train to become true Shadowhunters. While we’ve known these characters less time than we’ve come to love in other series, they’re still lovable and well-developed.

Although this book focuses on Simon, there are many appearances from other core characters of the Shadowhunter series (such as Jace, Alec, Magnus, Clary, Izzy, and more). There is also an introduction of new characters as students who are also in the academy with Simon. All new characters are richly described and make the story realistic.

I like that in addition to learning about Simon’s experiences, we also get more information about what happened to the other characters in Simon’s past and what they’ve been up to since the end of the last book.
