The End of October By Lawrence Wright – Audiobook Online

“The End of October” by Lawrence Wright is a novel that tells the story of a global pandemic caused by a deadly virus called Kongoli-68. The story follows Dr. Henry Parsons, an epidemiologist from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as he travels to Indonesia to investigate the outbreak.

As Parsons works to contain the virus and prevent its spread, he faces political and cultural obstacles from local authorities and international organizations. Meanwhile, back in the United States, Parsons’ family and colleagues are struggling to cope with the outbreak, which quickly spreads throughout the world and has devastating consequences.

The novel explores the human cost of pandemics, the realities of global health crises, and the potential for governments and individuals to come together to combat them. Through vivid characters and detailed descriptions of medical procedures and infectious diseases, “The End of October” offers a gripping and insightful look into a frighteningly realistic scenario that could threaten the entirety of humanity.

At an internment camp in Indonesia, 47 people are pronounced dead with acute hemorrhagic fever. When Henry Parsons – microbiologist, epidemiologist – travels there on behalf of the World Health Organization to investigate, what he finds will soon have staggering repercussions across the globe: An infected man is on his way to join the millions of worshipers in the annual Hajj to Mecca. Now, Henry joins forces with a Saudi prince and doctor in an attempt to quarantine the entire host of pilgrims in the holy city…

A Russian émigré, a woman who has risen to deputy director of US Homeland Security, scrambles to mount a response to what may be an act of biowarfare…. Already-fraying global relations begin to snap, one by one, in the face of a pandemic…. Henry’s wife, Jill, and their children face diminishing odds of survival in Atlanta…. And the disease slashes across the United States, dismantling institutions – scientific, religious, governmental – and decimating the population. As packed with suspense as it is with the fascinating history of viral diseases, Lawrence Wright has given us a full-tilt, electrifying, one-of-a-kind thriller.

I really enjoyed the first about half of this book but it seemed as though the author just couldn’t find an ending. It went on and on and on. Good character development and research but with a highly unlikely ending.
