The Sinking Admiral – Audiobook Online

The Sinking Admiral is a collaborative detective novel written by members of The Detection Club, with Simon Brett serving as the editor. The book follows the traditional “round-robin” format, where each chapter is written by a different author, building upon the previous contributions to create a cohesive story.

The story is set in the fictional coastal town of Crabwell-on-Sea, known for its picturesque harbor and bustling tourist industry. The Admiral Hotel, owned by Admiral Penistone, is a prominent landmark in the town. However, when the Admiral’s body is discovered floating in the harbor, it becomes clear that foul play is involved.

The narrative begins with the discovery of the Admiral’s body by a local fisherman. Inspector Littlejohn of Scotland Yard is called in to investigate the mysterious death. As he delves into the case, he uncovers a web of secrets and motives among the hotel staff and guests.

The suspects include Lady Amanda Fitton, a wealthy widow who had been engaged to the Admiral; Captain Dandy Dick Elmhurst, a retired naval officer with a penchant for gambling; Miss Emily Trefusis, an eccentric artist who had been staying at the hotel; and Mr. Henry Fairhurst, a shady businessman with connections to organized crime.

Each chapter reveals new clues and perspectives as different authors take turns advancing the plot. The authors skillfully maintain consistency in character development and plot progression, ensuring that the story remains engaging and coherent throughout.

As Inspector Littlejohn interviews each suspect and uncovers their hidden pasts, he gradually pieces together the puzzle surrounding the Admiral’s death. The investigation takes unexpected twists and turns, leading to a dramatic climax where the truth behind the murder is finally revealed.

Floating Admiral is the Detective Club’s first collaborative novel, in which 12 members of the club wrote a single novel. 85 years later, the 14 members of the club are once again collaborating on The Sinking Admiral.

Admiral is a tavern in the Suffolk seaside village of Crabwell, Admiral Byng. Admiral is also the nickname of its owner, Geoffrey Horatio Fitzsimmons, as well as the name of the owner’s dinghy. None of them were as popular as expected, as the pub was in danger of closing due to declining sales.

The temper was strained by the arrival of a TV documentary crew when Fitzsimmons was found dead on his moored boat. The villagers assumed a simple suicide and feared that their heavily indebted pub would now sink without a trace.

Journalists seem determined to get the job done by rummaging through old skeletons, but they don’t believe the fact that this story has been written by 14 extremely competitive crime writers – talented con artists. three, who will spare no means to save a good pub.

The Sinking Admiral, edited by outgoing president of the Detective Club – author and broadcaster Simon Brett, OBE – continues a tradition founded by the founders of the Detective Club in in 1931, when Dorothy L. Sayers, Agatha Christie, Freeman Wills Crofts and 11 other respected authors wrote The Floating Admiral, a collaborative novel, to challenge themselves, engage audiences, and help cover costs. club activities.

Fourteen different authors have collaborated on this creative mystery. All the chapters — each by each author with some editor’s interpolation to provide a running thread — have been carefully woven together by the Editor, Simon Brett. This is the sequel to a series of books by members of Britain’s Golden Age Mystery Discovery Club, and it’s very cleverly done. The authors must have had a lot of fun working with the book and it shows.

Keep me guessing until the end. Loved the main character and felt that the different authors put together well. Very happy. Please more! Love the twisted story of this collaboration, a new find for me. Totally engaging listening

I found this reading particularly interesting when I read it shortly after reading The Floating Admiral written by the original members of the Detective Club. I think having different authors adds texture to the book as they all have their own style and quirks. If you want something different then try this modern collaboration.
