I’ve loved Kristen Painter’s Nocturne Falls series since the first book, The Vampire Mail-Order Bride, where we meet Delaney and Hugh.

This is Stanhill’s story. Stanhill is Hugh Ellingham’s “rook” (a person who is not fully a vampire but serves a vampire). Stanhill is in love with the witch Corette and the story begins with him coming to pick her up for the annual Black and Orange Festival, Nocturne Falls’ biggest social event of the year. Stanhill is nothing if not prepared for anything. His whole life is about preparation.

What Stanhill is not prepared for is that the spell goes wrong by Corette’s daughters and that could mean he not only loses her physically but also mentally as well as the spell The uncle is designed to erase memories. Stanhill was not prepared for that.

It’s funny, funny and sad at times with the way Stanhill deals with the possible loss of his woman’s love if her daughters can’t reverse the curse.
