Five Days Gone is about the mystery of my mother’s disappearance as a child by author Laura Cumming.
The book deals with the mysterious abduction of her mother as a toddler in a small English seaside village.

In the fall of 1929, when Laura Cumming’s mother was three years old, she was kidnapped from a beach on the English coast of Lincolnshire. There were no screams when she was arrested, suggesting that the perpetrator was someone familiar to her. She reappeared in a nearby village a few days later, happy and perfectly healthy. No one has ever been charged. The incident quickly faded from her memory, and her parents never discussed it. They purposely kept her hidden, and she hadn’t known about it for half a century.

For many years, while raising her in isolation and harsh protection, they also hid the fact that she was adopted and shortly after the kidnapping her name was changed from Grace to Betty .

Using photographs from the time, historical documents and works of art, Cumming investigates this identity theft case with a detective’s toolkit and a daughter’s unique intimacy. The girl is trying to understand her family’s past and its legacies.
