In 1993, Special Forces Rangers were sent on a mission to capture two top lieutenants of a rebel warlord and return to base. It is supposed to take about an hour. Instead, they are gripped in a long and terrible night, locked in a desperate struggle to kill or be killed.

When the last unit was rescued the next morning, 18 American soldiers were dead and dozens more were seriously injured. The numbers in Somalia are much worse; More than five hundred people were cut down and more than a thousand people were injured. The dramatic story of award-winning literary journalist Mark Bowden captures this daunting ordeal through the eyes of the young men who fought that day.
