Kate drinks with a group of Russian fishermen at a port bar, all of them trying to flirt with her in a semi-serious, bigger-than-life way; Kate’s protagonist with a young, deformed girl, Aluet, who interprets life using a narrative knife to draw in the sand on the beach, and her basket-wearing grandmother, who shares chi details the history of her people and Kate’s fall into the frozen abyss, trapped in a crab cage. All of these are told with skill and a keen eye to make them realistic and engaging.
