The Virgil Flowers Series by John Sandford
I’d read all Sandford’s “Prey” novels then decided to order the most recently released Virgil Flowers one. That lead to my ordering all the rest of this series. After they’d all arrived, I put them in publication order. Beginning with the first of the series,I began a John Sandford’s Virgil Flowers series reading marathon. If you’re a mystery/thriller fan you’ve probably read Sandford
and know what to expect. Excellent character development, good descriptions of people and places, interesting story lines, plots with twists and turns, real life, although not for the sensitive to vulgarity, conversations and page-turning, have to see what happens next stories. Rather than get into the storyline of each book in the series, since so many other reviews have already done that, I think that pretty much says it all. The one thought I had after completing each one was…”How does he come up with all these different story lines?” If you like reading mystery/thriller books, I highly recommend John Sandford.
Review 2: Deadline – Virgil Flowers Book 8 by Charles M. Acord
I still remember when I read “Rules of Prey” so many years ago. That got me hooked on Lucas Davenport, and I have stayed with him thru I don’t how many books, over 20 for sure. Then, just as Lucas was getting older and married and having kids and maybe a little stale (maybe), along came Virgil Flowers (I don’t think I should say his actual nickname here), and I found myself in a fresh new bro-mance. Virgil is like a young Lucas in many ways, but also the opposite of him in many ways…Lucas carries a 1911 .45 and is a stone cold killer, whereas Virgil more often than not forgets to get his standard-issue Glock out of his truck – it has almost cost him his life more than once. Lucas is an expert shot with his .45 – Virgil once attempted to shoot a bad guy in the chest from about 10 feet and hit him in the foot (in all fairness to Virgil, it *did* stop the bad guy, and with a lot less paperwork than a fatal shot would have required). Just like with Lucas, it is not the current mystery that enchants me and holds my attention, but watching either of them stalk/muddle through all the clues and locations and witnesses until they stumble into the answer to it.
This current book, about a crooked (and deadly) school board in a small town, was just more fun and delicious Virgil. I would gladly pay 25 bucks a month to join a Virgil Book of the Month Club, if there was such a thing. As it is, each book takes me 2-3 nights to read, and I only get one a year. Dang it !!!!
Review 3: Deadline – Virgil Flowers Book 8 by Michelle M
This is a really good suspense thriller. I enjoy the Virgil Flowers series and this one continues the standard set by previous novels, Virgil, is a professional who gets the job done but does it in his own way. I like the humor just as much as the suspense and mystery that took place. One of the things that I enjoyed about this book is that there were multiple interwoven mysteries that needed to be solved and they were all handled with Virgil’s usual laid back but ultimately efficient style. I liked this book and enthusiastically recommend it.
