Lucas Davenport finds himself in a very unusual situation – no longer working for the Minnesota BCA. His friend, the governor, was just preparing a presidential campaign, and he invited Lucas to join him as a member of his campaign team. When they discover they have a shadow: an armed man who intends to kill the governor… and anyone who gets in his way.

Davenport has left behind the bureaucratic complications of the Minnesota Crime Bureau, where he leads a team that investigates the crack in solving a series of challenging cases.

Rich independently from selling a software company many years earlier and marrying a successful plastic surgeon, Davenport needs absolutely no money.

He was able to quickly take off for Iowa in response to a cry for help from his old friend and protégé, Elmer Henderson, the governor of Minnesota. Henderson is running for President in the race to the Iowa Caucuses.
