This is by far the weirdest book in Ed McBain’s 87th Area series, at least of the ones I’ve read so far. Although the story takes place within the confines of the region, only some of the detectives who normally reside in these stories even make guest appearances, and they have no actual impact on the outcome of the story. story.

The story unfolds from the third person perspective of Roger Broome, who is visiting Isola from a rural community in the suburbs. Broome and his brother made handmade bowls and other wooden items and Roger came to town to sell them. The story begins on a cold early winter morning when Broome leaves the motel where he is staying with the intention of going to the police station. He has something to tell the detectives there. We didn’t know exactly what he had to say for a while, but when he arrived at the station Broome felt cold feet and decided to delay his entry for a bit.
