During a sweltering heatwave, detectives Carella and Kling try to make sense of an artist who turned off the air conditioner to commit suicide – but Kling has an even more dangerous problem at hand.

Area 87 takes place during a sweltering heatwave that refuses to let go. The heat and humidity are tormenting everyone as well as the problems, both professional and personal, that the Precinct detectives face.
Detectives Steve Carella and Bert Kling are called to the death scene. A woman returns home from a week-long trip to London to discover her husband’s body decomposing on the floor of their apartment. The air conditioning in the apartment was turned off and the temperature inside the apartment was 109 degrees. The guy has been dead for a while and so, needless to say, things are a bit ripe.
