Hue 1968 – Audiobook Online

Hue 1968 is a book about the turning point of the American war in Vietnam by Mark Bowden.
Hue 1968, is the story of the heart of the Tet Offensive and a turning point in the American war in Vietnam.
By January 1968, despite the influx of half a million American troops, the war in Vietnam seemed to have reached a stalemate. General William Westmoreland, commander of US forces, proclaimed a new phase of the war in which “the end began to manifest”. The North Vietnamese had a different opinion. In mid-1967, the leadership in Hanoi began planning an attack to win a war. Part military action and part popular uprising, the Tet Offensive included attacks throughout South Vietnam, but the most impressive and successful was the capture of Hue, the capital cultural capital of the country. At 2:30 a.m. on January 31, 10,000 troops of the National Liberation Front from hiding camps poured into the city of 140,000 people. By morning, all of Hue was in the hands of the Front, except for two small military outposts.

Domestic commanders and politicians in Washington refused to believe the size and scope of the Front’s presence. Captain Chuck Meadows was ordered to lead his 160 Marines Golf Company against thousands of enemy troops in the first attempt to re-enter Hue later that day. Lieutenant Colonel Ernie Cheatham eventually devised a strategy to retake the city, block by block and building by building, in some of the fiercest urban battles since World War II.

With unprecedented access to war archives in the United States and Vietnam and interviews with participants from both sides, Bowden narrates each stage of this pivotal battle through multiple perspectives. the point. Taking place over 24 days of gruesome fighting and ultimately killing 10,000 soldiers and civilians, the Battle of Hue was by far the bloodiest of the entire war. The American debate was never again about winning, but about how to leave. In Hue 1968, Bowden skillfully recreated this pivotal moment in the war against America in Vietnam.
