“In This Grave Hour” by Jacqueline Winspear is the 13th book in the Maisie Dobbs series and the first of her books that I have read. I enjoyed it, and I will read more. I read the plot summaries of the remaining twelve books, and I note that the books span many years between WWl and WWll. Although Maisie’s adventures have taken her to many countries, including Belgium, Spain and India, she is “currently” working in the London area as a PI, supported by two people. is different.

The plot of this book revolves around the assassination-style murder of a long-term refugee (WWl) from Belgium. Not long after, there is another murder, and then…. The story is very well paced and a quick read. This is a time and place that has long fascinated me, and I’m glad Winspear included so many little details about life in 1939 London, such as wearing a gas mask over her shoulder, to enhance it. her story. The story moves quickly, the ending is satisfying, and there’s enough of a story or two to get you back to the next story.
