Jack/ Gilead, Book 4 – Audiobook Online
Jack is the fourth love book in the Gilead series by author Marilynne Robinson.
Marilynne Robinson Gilead’s long-awaited novel – one of the great works of contemporary literature.
With Jack, Robinson takes her listeners back to the small town of Gilead, Iowa, in 1956, to tell the story of John Ames Boughton, John Ames’ godson and his family’s black sheep. He was a prodigal and beloved son who fell in love with and married Della, a beautiful and intelligent African-American teacher he met in St. Louis isolated. Their beautiful, romantic relationship is one of Robinson’s greatest achievements.
With this novel, Marilynne Robinson ends the story that began in her previous book “Gilead” and continues in the subsequent volumes “Home” and “Lila”. The four books work together to tell a single story that focuses on the Boughton and Ames family living in and from the fictional town of Gilead, Iowa.
“Jack” can be read as a stand-alone novel, but you shouldn’t. Instead of reading it in the order it was written, the last of the four. Robinson’s range of achievements cannot be fully appreciated until all four have been read. She has created a series of old testament books, written in a modern context. Slightly modern, which is because the books are all set after World War II, in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Start with Gilead. The next three books are like the bible retelling the same story, involving the same people, each from a different point of view, each arising from a different context, expanding the story bit by bit. until it is fully revealed for all to see – all the good and the bad.
