By the time of Killer’s Choice, Ed McBain’s 87th Area series had reached a comfortable level of quality. While each individual novel is a good story, the series as a whole has become a pioneer not only in police proceedings, but also in compilation series (the latter being well-executed). by the television show Hill Street Blues).

With the main “character” in this series being a police department, not a standard hero, it’s no surprise that in this novel a previous reenactment character dies and another Others will join the cast. I’m not going to spoil things by saying who’s going to die (though his murder will be a major side episode), but the new guy is Cotton Hawes, a slightly naive detective brought in from a precinct. criminals are often less criminals to the more challenging Area 87.
