I’ve never read a single Ed McBain book that I didn’t really enjoy reading, including Blackboard Jungle, and that says a lot about this author. With most other authors, I get tired of their characters after a while. They either fail to grow, start repeating the same thing over and over, or become annoyed with their apparent perfection. You’ll never get that with McBain, especially with his 87th precinct books. This is a group of characters with distinct personalities and roles, and it’s been a pleasure to read each of his many books.

Most of his time is handled by Cotton Hawes, in collaboration with Steve Carella. I was reading the Kindle version with McBain’s intro explaining how the unnamed editor wanted him to make a more ‘masculine’ detective, and he tried a bit with Hawes in this version – – Hawes often interviews several suspects in this murder mystery and if they are beautiful women, ends up in bed with them. That in itself is a bit humorous as it is described that he is ‘in love’ until after bed.
