King’s Ransom is the 10th mystery novel in the 87th Precinct series by author Ed McBain.
McBain delivers the action and suspense we’ve come to expect. An emotional businessman is faced with a kidnapping, the ransom of which could sabotage his biggest commercial mission ever – except when Detective Steve Carella can figure it out. perpetrator before being caught, raided into murder.

Ed McBain set the standard for police procedure with Cop Hater in 1956. Few other writers could juggle so many main characters well and keep them fresh in nearly 60 books. Each book is unique, never a ‘fill in the blank’ copy of the previous book.

King’s Ransom, about an unsuccessful kidnapping case, is less action-oriented and less police procedural than some of the other books in the series. They’re both there but they back down from the personalities and motives of some of the main characters.

As in all of his 87th Precinct books, the city is just like his character Steve Carella, his star detective. Only McBain could dedicate a page to the city sunrise and not let it slow the novel down.
