Lady Oracle By: Margaret Atwood – Audiobook Online

Lady Oracle is a literary fiction book by author Margaret Atwood.
From chubby girl to skinny girl, from red hair to mud brown, from London to Toronto, from the count of Poland to her radical husband – Joan Foster is completely bewildered by her life of multiple personalities. She decides to flee to an Italian hill town to get her life back. She has to organize her own death.

All in all, I think Margaret Atwood is a women’s writer who tackles both political and personal issues important to women. She also writes a lot of science fiction, which I have read and enjoyed (and I don’t usually read science fiction) her recent Crake and Oryx trilogy. But this novel is something else.

The heroine, Joan, is a woman who staged her own death – for a variety of reasons. The idea is one that appeals to many women – maybe not staging their own deaths, but just disappearing and starting all over again in some strange place. Unfortunately, the exotic location isn’t all the charm for Joan and she spends a lot of time reviewing her past, trying to save money and writing a Gothic romance novel, here is her regular source of income. Joan has kept many secrets over the years, and has layers of her unusual personality, but can also represent the layers of any woman’s personality. She is rebellious and submissive; frivolous and pragmatic; sentimental and cynical. She creates cages for herself and then tries to break out of them, figuratively.
