The dead man was Connor Swann, son-in-law of two of London’s most famous opera personalities.
Marks on the corpse’s neck indicate that Swann had been strangled. As Duncan and Gemma explore the tranquil woods above the Thames and the dazzling world of London opera in search of answers. They uncover a web of family secrets and hidden emotions. When Duncan discovers he is dangerously attracted to a suspect, he and Gemma deal with their complicated emotional feelings for each other.

Here are some comments from readers to better understand this good audiobooks:

01- Connor Swann was an enthusiast, fond of wine, women, and horses. He had found it underwater, with a bruise on his throat. Connor is married to the aristocratic Asherton family, but has his wife Julia been trying to divorce him for a year, or is he trying to divorce her? She is also being questioned by members of her family and others in their art circles. The Ashertons are leading figures in the opera world, and Julia is a gifted painter.
Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and his sergeant Gemma James dig deep into their past, surprising secrets that are sure to be revealed. Everyone has something to hide the past. Kincaid is attracted to Julia, as well as his sergeant. The normally self-possessed man deals with impulses that don’t suit him. The interrogation took place with pub wine and cucumber sandwiches contributing to the atmosphere that characterizes Crombie’s mysteries in England.

02- Crombie weaves some art and opera information relating to a titled family in the past and secretly influencing the present. Crombie creates interesting side characters while fostering the relationship between regulars Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James. Other Crombie novels have Kincaid and James driving back and forth too much between London and various villages. Their thoughts or conversations while driving increase deductibles that, for one, don’t much care if their car is in worse shape or it rains while they’re driving.
The plot is very engaging and continues to work on the solution, with the detectives coming to the end. Kincaid and James question each other’s objectivity because they don’t want certain suspects to suffer. Kincaid is the one who crosses professional boundaries in this novel, seemingly unaware of his own mind.

03- In each book containing a separate mystery and murder, the family theme repeats throughout all the stories. The murders often come to Duncan and Gemma – separately and together. After reading several books that have been adapted into TV series, this is one of the best in its genre.
