In the summer of 1993, twin sisters Kennedy and Carter Wynn were embracing the grunge era and testing all limits in their privileged suburb of Richmond. Kennedy’s teenage rebellion went too far when, after a night of partying in the woods, her best friend, Haley, was murdered, and Kennedy quickly became suspicious. She cannot remember anything about the night in question. That last one, with damning testimony from a college boy both Kennedy and Haley loved, was enough to force Kennedy to plead guilty.

In 2008, Kennedy was released into a world that had gone on without her. Carter grew estranged when she questioned Kennedy’s innocence and began a relationship with someone who could keep the sisters apart forever. The twins’ father, Gerry, is desperate to protect the family’s fragile secrets and relationships. Kennedy’s return rekindled the tragedy, along with a whole new wave of media. When a crime show host comes to town to question, believing the murder is not as simple as it seems, murky memories of Haley’s death come to light. New suspects emerge and the suburban woods finally reveal their secrets, the two families may be destroyed again.

Twins Kennedy and Carter grew up privileged, outspoken, and lived a life of no regrets. When they become friends with Haley, things change for the better.

Kennedy’s confession never worked for me when I read it. It seems like there are parts where I think maybe she’s jealous of the attention Haley is getting and could have done it. The fact that she doesn’t have a stipulation of the events unfolding seems extremely favorable to being charged with murder, but in this case it wasn’t an act and inadvertently defending the real killer.

I didn’t expect Carter and Everett (Haley’s younger brother) to come together and be the beacon the other needed. Past pain makes them connect and stick together, even when things go against them.

Haley has countless demons lurking beneath the surface, and the dead girls are defenseless. Story everyone went with the truth shadow, and let the monsters continue to run free. Kennedy found Haley’s body without immediately notifying someone and taking a lock of hair was definitely not good for her. Then 15 years later, when it all came crashing down, I couldn’t even imagine the terrible and devastating tragedy of realizing that it was my own father who killed my best friend because she was pregnant with his child, trap and put you in jail.
