The magic is really dark and strange in this one. This historical fantasy is sad and enjoyable, even at a slower pace. The sweet and shy guy is a great pairing to settle down with Katherine, and they balance out some of Owen’s constant sadness.
In a way, it’s nice that the characters, especially the male characters, are quite naive and often uncertain. Unfortunately, I feel like the narrator exaggerates the emotions to the point where they sometimes seem a bit lame. They were always scared of the “watchmen” but I didn’t know what would happen if they were caught by one, so they felt panic for no reason.
However, the mystery of what happened to Owen and the watch is nicely conveyed and this is a short, light, and beautiful book.
