Mr Hire’s innocence won’t deter those looking for scapegoats as tragedy unfolds in this devastatingly poignant and poignant audiobook.
This is another “Romans durs” by Georges Simenon, which he considers more serious fiction than Inspector Maigret’s detective novels. This is the second of these that I have read, the first being “The Widow”. While not quite as good as the latter, the current book is a well-written psychological novel about a quiet, insecure little man who becomes entangled with a strange woman and thus has involved in a terrible crime. The story has a lively pace and holds my interest throughout until the dramatic ending.
I liked this book but I didn’t like it. About three-quarters of the way through, I was surprised to see that Simenon seemed to use a new technique, the ‘unreliable narrator’. My understanding of the story, especially the protagonist Mr Hire, has completely changed. Confused, I read on to the conclusion that seemed to be based on a scene young Simenon had witnessed during his early stay in Liege.
Then after reading the reviews on Amazon I now feel that I was a bit cheated and the real problem here is the poor translation rather than an error in one of the early Roman works by Simenon.
The novel has a lot to say about the power of mob rule, rumours, insinuations, and the chilling dangers of being seen as a loner or an outsider. A publisher of this caliber should review this work and do it fairly.
