In 1844, Missouri belle Julia Dent met Lieutenant Ulysses S Grant, the dazzling horseman. Four years passed before their parents allowed them to marry, and the groom’s abolitionist family refused to attend the ceremony. Jule protects her mistress’s closely-kept twin secret: She has dangerously poor eyesight but has a gift for divination. So Jule became the one to keep an eye on Julia’s world. And what a world marked by the clouds of war.

The sponsors vowed never to split, As Ulysses rose through the ranks – becoming commander-in-chief of the Confederate Army – so did their treaty stakes. During the war, Julia often traveled with Jule and the four Grant children, faced with unreliable transportation and certain dangers while with her husband. Julia and Jule saw two different wars. While Julia spoke up for women – the Confederacy and the Confederacy – she continued to hold Jule as a slave after the Confederacy’s lines. After signing the Emancipation Proclamation, Jule proclaimed her freedom and rose to prominence as a businesswoman in her own right, taking on the honorary title of Madame. The two women’s paths continued to cross each other throughout the Grants’ White House years in Washington, DC. Then in New York City, where Grant’s Tomb is located.
