Much Fall of Blood is the third science fiction book in the Heirs of Alexandria series by Eric Flint, Mercedes Lackey, and Dave Freer.
Prince Manfred and his mentor and bodyguard, the death warrior Erik, have survived dangers and enemies both natural and supernatural. Unlike their new mission, they soon gave up that hope. Returning from Jerusalem, they and the knights of the Holy Trinity escorting them were escorting the envoy of II Khan Mongol to the land of the Golden Horde – between the Black Sea and the Carpathian Mountains, which had been the eastern fortress against the enemy. their old enemy, the demon Chernobog and his possessed puppet, Jangellion.

Another diplomatic mission leads Manfred and his knights to become caught up in a tribal civil war, rescuing a fugitive woman and her wounded brother, and becoming involved in implicated in the affairs of Prince Vlad, duke of Valahia, who was detained. He was held hostage by King Emeric of Hungary until freed by Countess Elizabeth Batholdy to use as bait to capture a group of non-humans. Wolf-like non-humans, who disguise themselves as gypsies, free Prince Vlad and help him return to his homeland to rebel against Hungary and recreate age-old spells. Manfred and Erik are forced into an alliance for the benefit of the Golden Horde and the ancient magical powers of Valahia, under the direction of the troubled Vlad. Magic requires blood, and Vlad dreads it.

I love the books featuring Erik and Manfred and the alternate history of Fourteenth century Europe (now Asia) that the four books of the Heirs of Alexandria blend Magic, the turn of fate that makes Mohammed a great Christian monk, and America settled by the Icelanders and Irish blending with the native cultures..

This book is a Stand Alone even if you haven’t read the others. It mixes the Golden Horde of Mongoles who swept into India and Russia (got as far as writing the Pope asking if he wanted help in our world) and Vlad Dracula, the man with our established heroes.

The more historical tidbits you know the more these books appeal.
