Allotment is a small piece of land that is rented or assigned to an individual or family to grow flowers or vegetables. It is more common in England than in the United States, and parcels of land can often be found in villages and council estates where free land has a premium.

Detective Inspector Hillary Greene of Thames Valley Police in Oxford was called to a plot of land in a small nearby village. Along with her group, she finds a 15-year-old boy in a gourd storage shed – stabbed to death with a pair of scissors. Worse still, the boy’s body was discovered by his 11-year-old sister.

Greene has just received an award for bravery – she saved her boss’s life in a terrible drug raid – and she learns that her temporary assignment is in her boss’s place. just – temporarily. He’s moved upstairs for a bigger job, and his replacement turns out to be the cop who investigated Greene after her crooked cop husband died.

As the team investigated, the case appeared one dead end after another. Until then, they started to look at how the victim could pay for a very expensive bike, and what else he might have done with his camera other than taking pictures of nature. Blackmail is raising its ugly head.

“Family Murder” is the fifth DI Hillary Greene mystery by British author Faith Martin. Martin manages to develop the main mystery story along with side stories about Greene and her team. And change is definitely underway, with one member preparing for a promotion at another station and one member pondering whether to resume her relationship with Greene’s former boss. Logically speaking, the plot and all three subplots come together at the end – and prepare us for our next enigmatic adventure.
