Naked Empire – Sword of Truth Book 8

Naked Empire is the eighth science fiction book in the Sword of Truth series by author Terry Goodkind. In the darkening sky, Kahlan could only make out the shapes of three black feathered races spreading their wings, beginning their nightly hunt. He ‘looked at the rest of the people waiting in uncomfortable silence. Kahlan skimmed through the mess of the rock, she didn’t see any other people. Richard raised the sword a few inches, checking that it was clear in the scabbard. A fleeting amber light shone through his golden cloak as he dropped the sword back into place. His familiar tall and strong features seemed like an apparition made of darkness.
Two other giant birds hit right overhead. One, its wings outstretched, let out a piercing scream as it plunged into a tight circle, circling to assess the five below before stroking its power.

01- This is a wonderful story about the human struggle and the ultimate victory of life over death. The content speaks of the individual’s victory over enslavement. This is not just your typical adventure/fantasy series, the content revolves around Richard, a man of steadfast virtue and principle. He has a great way of overcoming nonsense, emotions, confusion, despair. He sees reality and he brings that sight to everyone around him. This is the perfect sequel to Pillars of Creation, but this time it revolves around Richard’s perspective.

02- As a fan of Sword of Truth. I even enjoyed The Pillars of Creation, but Naked Empire was a painful experience in many ways. Goodkind has a habit of “rereading” his previous books while telling the story. But in Naked Empire, he reads pages, and sometimes entire chapters at once, recounting what happened “up until now.”

The rest of the book is spent reading over and over again about Ayn Rand and her philosophy. But Naked Empire reads more like a philosophical text book than an epic fantasy novel.

03- Once again Goodkind occupied countless pages with his philosophical discussions of good and evil and the need to fight for freedom. I find myself actually scanning through these passages often as they have been comprehensively covered in previous books of the series. The story gets interesting but in my opinion, Terry doesn’t show us any magic like he did in the first few books. A lot of people have suggested that Goodkind cut the idea from Robert Jordan’s “Wheel of Time” series.

04- The book is gradually more preaching. This is Goodkind’s culmination of all chapters on self-worth and love of life. This is a story where the main characters have the weakest relationship with the main story. The enemy leader emerges suddenly, loses power, is unstoppable, and is then eliminated without contention. Richard’s life-threatening issues have been resolved with fixes.

The book is lengthy as it retells the same old philosophy and retells the history – what happened in the previous books – to new characters, Some of the action scenes are completely covered up with short synopsis most compact. The book features many interesting and engaging characters in a detailed plot.
