News of the World is a literary fiction book by author Paulette Jiles.
In 1870 and Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd passed through northern Texas, giving live readings to paying audiences hungry for news of the world. An elderly widow who has lived three wars and fought two, the captain enjoys his lone, rootless existence.

At Wichita Falls, he was offered a $50 piece of gold to deliver an orphan to her relatives in San Antonio. A group of Kiowa robbers killed Johanna’s parents and sister; forgive the little girl, they raised her like their own child. Recently rescued by the US military, the 10-year-old is once again separated from the only home she knows.

Their 400-mile journey south through unstable territory and treacherous terrain proved difficult and sometimes dangerous. Johanna has forgotten English, tries to escape all the time, throws away her shoes and refuses to act “civilized”. Two lonely survivors hesitantly begin to trust each other, forging a bond that marks the difference between life and death in this dangerous land.

Arriving in San Antonio, the reunion was neither pleasant nor welcoming. The captain must hand Johanna over to an aunt and uncle whose name she can’t remember – strangers see her as an unwanted burden. As a respectable man, Captain Kidd faces a terrible choice: leave the girl to his fate or become – in the eyes of the law – the kidnapper himself.
