Norwegian Wood By: Haruki Murakami – Audiobook Online

Norwegian Wood is a literary fiction book by author Haruki Murakami.
Norwegian Wood brought Haruki Murakami to the forefront of literature for the first time.

Toru, a serious young university student in Tokyo, is devoted to Naoko, a beautiful and introverted young woman, but their shared feelings are marked by the tragic death of a close friend years ago. As Naoko retreats further into her own world, Toru finds herself drawn to an intensely sexually liberated and independent young woman.

A wonderful coming-of-age story filled with nostalgia, Norwegian Wood blends 60s music, mood and character with a young man’s heroic and hopeless first love.

Murakami is someone I never completely fell in love with, but kept coming back to. I don’t like some of the mythical and surreal elements in his writing, but I’m also intrigued by its energy, intelligence, and creativity. And I also like the way he puts in his work elements of Western culture, especially music.

Norwegian Wood is a candid story about love, loss and growing up. It’s not cluttered by any surrealism or fantasy. And it’s filled with references to classical music and jazz, as well as western rock music of the late sixties. (As the title would suggest.) So Norwegian Wood was exactly the right book from Murakami to pick up next, the one that pushed me to delve deeper into his work.

It tells the story of Toru Watanabe, a college freshman living in Tokyo. Like many young men his age, he didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life and chose to major in drama for no real reason. And like many men his age, women both complicate and clarify things.
