In this book (number 9 in the series), the author leaves London and the English countryside for the Scottish Highlands. Excellently researched as usual – readers feel at home in Scotland with Deborah Crombie’s descriptive storytelling and of course her stellar ability to make characters jump off the page!
A complex plot that uses the author’s favorite technique of delving into previous generations to explain the anxieties of current descendants. Perhaps a bit more of a “romantic thriller” than a crime mystery. Some readers may be a little disappointed to see some of their loveliest characters in previous books go through very difficult times – but Deborah Crombie seems to enjoy pulling our readers back. more realistic than indulging in as many pleasant fantasies about life as we can enjoy it.
The conclusion is as expected from all her books – very pleased with all the loose ends that are nicely tied together.
