Between that first novel and “Olive Again,” this mysterious and much-loved character has appeared in other novels, all of which are set near or in a small Maine town. The characters in these novels appear and pick up where they left off. For example, “The Burgess Boys” with their wives and sister appear in a chapter that provides a sort of epilogue to that novel. In Strout’s fictional universe, the bonds between characters are closely linked, reflecting how it happens to those in our lives or those lurking on the periphery of the finale. our social connection.
