Once Upon a Time is a collection of short stories featuring today’s best Islamic voices, all about the happiest holiday of the year: Eid! Eid: Short, one-syllable word that evokes a variety of emotions and memories for Muslims. Maybe it’s waking up to the sound of fried samosa or feeling comfortable with a bean bun, maybe it’s the joy of putting on a new outfit for Eid prayers, or maybe giving parties gifts and holidays will come on that day. Whatever it is, for those who cherish this anniversary, the emotional reactions can be summed up in one short and sweet word: joy.

This is a great mix of secondary stories; There really is something for everyone. Some of the stories didn’t resonate as loudly as others for me, but overall, I enjoyed this collection. It’s definitely middle school and I think it would be nice to share it with younger kids, but adults can get a lot out of it too. As someone unfamiliar with many of the cultural elements in the book, I had to look up a few things, but I think many of it was explained clearly enough by the authors to people from any background. Anyone can understand. So many stories emphasize the power of humanity, community, and giving and that moved me deeply. My favorites in the collection are Do’nut Break Tradition and Taste.
