One Step Behind is the seventh mystery novel in the Kurt Wallander series by Henning Mankell.
On Mid-Autumn Festival, three teenagers dressed in 18th-century costumes are shot in a remote Swedish meadow. One of Inspector Kurt Wallander’s most trusted colleagues, whom he hopes to count on to solve the case, also dies, Wallander learning that the murders are linked. His only clue was a photo of a woman no one in Sweden seemed to know, he couldn’t begin to imagine how.

Reeling from his father’s death and facing his own declining health, Wallander tracks down the killer. Trapped in a desperate attempt to catch him before he attacks again, Wallander always seems to be one step behind.

In “One Step Behind,” that’s exactly what Kurt Wallander and the Ystad police department seem to be doing in their latest case. Kurt was having a lot of health problems and finally had to see a doctor, but this latest case took so long that he barely had time to eat or sleep.

It’s New Year’s Eve when people in Sweden throw parties to celebrate the summer solstice. A particular group of young people planned in advance to celebrate on a meadow in a park that was mostly hidden from view unless one went there in person. It was an isolated area that wasn’t frequented by many people. These three young people dress up every year in costumes and this special time they dress up as people from the 18th century and even bring music from that period to play.

They also have refreshments to enjoy. As they were eating, listening to music and generally enjoying time together, each was shot dead. They didn’t tell anyone where they went, and when they didn’t return home, one of the parents was sure they were missing, but because the police didn’t have a clue, they couldn’t file a missing person report because they feel that young people will soon return home.
