From the street markets to the halls of Japan’s best universities to the pachinko parlors of the criminal underworld, Lee’s complex and passionate characters – strong, stubborn women , devoted sisters and sons , fathers shaken by moral crisis – survive and thrive against the indifferent arc of history .

This is an excellent book. A real page turner. The origin of the story revolves around the Japanese colonial occupation of Korea from 1910 to 1945. This book tells the story of how ordinary Koreans survived this period and beyond. The book is about a poor family during the occupation, World War II, the Cold War, and the Korean War. It refers to several religions that Koreans follow in Korea and Japan.

It’s easy to get caught up in the characters. There is a lot of fluff in the book. The author expanded on characters that any reader and certainly not me would be interested in.
