Past Tense/ Jack Reacher, Book 23 – Audiobook Online

Past Tense is the 23rd literary fiction book in the Jack Reacher series by author Lee Child.
Jack Reacher hit the sidewalk and stuck his thumb out. He plans to follow the sun on an epic trip across America, from Maine to California. He doesn’t get far. On a country road deep in the woods of New England, he saw a sign that led to a place he had never been to: the town where his father was born. What is an extra day, he thought? He took a detour.

At the same time, in the same deserted area, a car broke down. Two young Canadians are on their way to New York City to sell a treasure. Now they are stuck at a lonely motel in the middle of nowhere. The owners seem almost too friendly. It’s a strange place, but that’s all.

The next morning, at the city clerk’s office, Reacher asked about the family’s old house. He said no one named Reacher had ever lived in town. He’d always known his father had left and never returned, but now Reacher wonders, was he even there in the first place?

As Reacher explores his father’s life, and as Canadians face deadly dangers, different story chains begin to merge. Then Reacher makes a shocking discovery: The present can be difficult, but the past can be tense…and deadly.

Another first-rate entry in the series that continues to set the gold standard for aspiring horror writers

After reading all the Reacher books in the past, I was at a loss for this one. There are two completely separate themes throughout the novel – Reacher stumbles across the town where his father was born, and some strange happenings happen in a motel – and, when those themes combine together, I’ve lost interest. By the end of the story, I almost lost my will to live! The book is unbelievably tedious, predictable, and with a coincidence that ties the storylines together that you can recognize from the first page.

It’s not a particularly long book, but it feels like it. It’s poorly written, disjointed, extremely formulaic, and it almost feels as if Lee Child has taken all the scraps from previous novels and pieced them together in this novel.
