Patina is the second book in the Track series by author Jason Reynolds.
A newcomer to the track team, Patina must learn to rely on her teammates as she tries to overcome her personal demons in the book’s sequel.
The spectre. Lu. rust layer. Sunny. The four children come from completely different backgrounds, with personalities that explode in conflict. But they are also four kids selected to the elite junior high school athletics team – a team that could help them qualify for the Junior Olympics if they can make it together. his show. They all have a lot to lose, but they also have a lot to prove, not only to each other but to themselves.
Patina, or Patty, runs like lightning. She runs away for many reasons – to escape the ridicule from the kids at the lavish new school she’s been sent to since she and her sister had to stop living with their mother. She’s on the run from why she can’t live with her “real” mother anymore: Her mother has The Sugar, and Patty fears that the disease will take her mother’s legs one day someone will take her away forever.
Patty is also running for her mother, who can’t. But do you ever really run away from any of this? As stress increases, it also creates a pretty bad attitude. Coach will not accept bad attitude. No day, no life. And now he wants Patty to run the relay… where you have to depend on someone else. How will she do it?
I think this book is an interesting one, obviously. I liked how it followed the other characters in Ghost, but didn’t have to read Ghost to enjoy this book. I would recommend this book to students in grades 5-8. It’s extremely positive (almost unbelievable) given the life situation Patina faced (father died suddenly, mother had both legs amputated), but it also shows the power of resilience. Patina is a strong character that shows you can learn and grow even in difficult circumstances.
