Griff Burkett is a high school kid, abandoned by his mother, adopted by a high school football coach. Griff won a scholarship to play football in college and then a multimillion-dollar contract with the Dallas Cowboys.

Griff has a kind heart, but his Achilles heel is his arrogance and gambling. At the end of his career, deep in debt, a local organized crime boss offers him a chance to settle his debts by throwing a game. Griff agreed, and went straight to an FBI sting.

After serving time, Griff found only closed doors. He is then summoned to the mansion of eccentric millionaire airline boss Foster Speakman. Speakman, a recluse after a car accident left him disabled, became impotent. He offered Griff half a million dollars to conceive his wife Laura, discreetly and with many rules. If Griff succeeds, he will leave town and never see his child again until he is alive.

Griff has few options. He is still hunted by Detective Stanley Rodarte, who has organized a gamble, and seems about to ruin Griff’s life. Griff had few means of livelihood, no family, and few friends. So he agrees – only to quickly realize he’s been ensnared.

This is the first book I read by this author. The story mainly focuses on Griff and begins on the day he was released from prison for fraud during his NFL quarterback days. He is summoned to the home of Foster Speakman: economist, airline owner and paraplegic.

Because of an accident that left him in a wheelchair a few years earlier, Foster was unable to have children with his wife and offered Griff a job plus half a million dollars to conceive naturally. That’s right. Foster wants Griff to have sex with his wife so they can finally have the child they so desperately want.
