Play with Fire/ A Kate Shugak Novel, Book 5 – Audiobook Online Free
Play with Fire is the fifth mystery novel in the Kate Shugak Novels series by author Dana Stabenow.
A mushroom hunt turns terrible when Kate Shugak stumbles across a burned, decomposing corpse in the middle of a forest of mages. The dead were the happy victims of last year’s bushfires? Why hasn’t anyone reported him missing? And why is he not dressed? With no evidence of foul play, soldiers tended to call it a death by negligence; Kate’s instincts suggest the opposite, leading her down a path that requires her to confront issues of community, faith, and free will.
I love the Kate Shugak series, but not this one. Stabenow dedicates the entire book minus a few chapters to justifying her views on God, religion, the Bible, and those who believe in Christ. I suppose if I agreed with her, I would enjoy the book. But I think she is completely wrong. If I wanted to hear her brand of “religion,” I would read a non-fiction book. And I’m very opposed to her using characters and storylines that I love to convince me of something that isn’t real.
I like this book by Kate Shaguk more than all the previous books, this is the opposite view of many other reviewers. Yes, this book can be a bit preachy. Yes, it concerns religious fanatics in Alaska, which is not a new idea. However, it also explores Kate’s personality more than any previous book. We learned a little bit about her childhood and how it influenced her outlook as an adult. Character development has always been my favorite part of a book, and in this installment of the series, Kate gets a lot more added than in previous books.
