Post Captain is the second novel in the Aubrey/Maturin series by author Patrick O’Brian.
The Peace of Amiens left Jack Aubrey with no ships, no enemies to pursue, and no possibility of receiving bonuses to supplement his meager income. His decision to seek refuge from his troubles and debts in France proves doubly disastrous.

The 2nd book in this critically acclaimed series follows the adventures of Captain Aubrey and Dr. Maturin. That’s a good thing as you would expect from this famous author. However, in my opinion, it is a little less interesting than the first book. Some action chapters are cut short and lack details. I got the impression that the author was “moving things around”. Even so, the circumstances of the two main characters have been expanded throughout the story. Maybe that’s the main goal of the author? I look forward to seeing the results in the 3rd book.

I read the entire series a few years ago and recently decided to re-read the first part in the series. I enjoyed it so much that now I’m looking to finish the whole series.

Patrick O’Brian accomplished something here that few authors have ever done. He has written not one but 20 excellent novels that tell the stories of Captain Jack Aubrey and Doctor Stephen Maturin. The novels have many details about the world of the early 19th century in which they lived, especially the world of British sailors during the Napoleonic wars.
