During her investigation, Brunetti encounters an unusual cast of characters but uncovers nothing that appears to be criminals. Was the nun simply creating a smokescreen to justify giving up her vocation? Or has she stumbled upon something very real and very sinister – something that puts her own life in imminent danger?

A fine, suspenseful novel, Quietly in Their Sleep is Donna Leon at the height of her form.

A slow start. Wonder when it will take off. A third of that distance is like a rocket. Brunetti and Vianello interview three eccentrics at their home. All three have their quirks and eccentricities. Brunetti and Vianello each take on different personalities to try and unlock each to get practical cues from them. Those are wonderfully funny dialogue pages. The laughter continued in other situations. Dialogue is great.

Donna Leon concludes her book clearly, completely, and quickly. You feel it’s done. It is completed. It doesn’t feel like the book ended incomplete. Doesn’t mean she doesn’t know how to end it. Miss Leon is an artist in encapsulating her novels
