Shotgun/ 87th Precinct, Book 23 – Free Full Audiobook
Shotgun is the 23rd mystery novel in the 87th Precinct series by author Ed McBain.
A man armed with a shotgun is roaming the city, killing couples. Detectives Carella and Kling must find him before he ends his next marriage.
McBain’s last 87th novel of the 1960s. This came out in 1969 and had a major turning point.
It begins with a couple brutally shot in the face with a shotgun. Bert Kling was so stunned he had to vomit. He and Carella worked together on this case. There are some interesting references to earlier events in the series. Kling is still with Cindy Forrest but they run into some problems when Bert is seen with a beautiful blonde witness. One of my favorite parts of the book was when the police encountered Roger Broome in “He Who Hesitating”. The finale epilogue is one of the best so far in the series, well worth the watch.
This is my first McBain book and I have to say it’s very enjoyable.
The language used is colloquial and the storytelling is straightforward, without dramatic climax, road chase stunts, slightly outdated and the characters, be they police, victim or witness, just ordinary people like you and me who can be contacted.
I can say that the only distraction I encountered while reading this book was that there were some references or explanations about the reference that made the details that I felt were unnecessary. There was a time when I was depressed and was about to give up, I’m glad I didn’t.
