I love Henning Mankell’s Kurt Wallandar books as well as the BBC TV series “Wallandar”. This is a crime-solving mystery that consumes 85% of the book in the wrong direction in solving the heinous crime that happened in this small Swedish town. While the reader soon learns who committed the crime, it is gripping its own interests for Wallandar and his team as they grow closer and closer to finding the killer.
Wallandar is a headache-prone, sleep-deprived, middle-aged detective with family members including his only child, his sometimes useless daughter, and his frail elderly father. He lost his keys, left his dirty clothes in the middle of the living room floor for days and scared and (postponed the call) his girlfriend because he was afraid of her reaction when he told her he have to postpone their planned vacation – even consider asking a female detective to call her for him. His weaknesses and weaknesses make him human and real. These traits combined with his stellar police work, strategic planning and team leadership add an intriguing dimension to the story.

Another fast-paced thriller from Henning Mankell. From the very first page, it is clear that this is not a factory mystery. There are many twists and turns when Wallander finds himself on the hunt for a particularly savage killer whose trophy is the victim’s scalp. Increasingly frustrated as he feels that he has lost his way, the sudden realization of the killer shocks him to the core. With his and his daughter’s lives at risk, time is running out and Wallander must face the killer in a final showdown as tragic as it is inevitable.
