South of the Border, West of the Sun is a literary fiction book by author Haruki Murakami.
South of the Border, West of the Sun is a gripping tale of the past brought back to life, and one of Haruki Murakami’s most moving novels.
Hajime has reached middle age with a loving family and an enviable career, but he still feels incomplete. When a childhood friend, now a beautiful woman, appears with a secret she cannot escape, doubts about Hajime’s normal existence begin to give way. South of the Border, West of the Sun, the simple arc of one’s life becomes the exquisite literary terrain of the brilliant genius Murakami.
Key Point One: South of the Border, West of the Sun by Haruki Murakami is, I hope, Murakami’s last attempt at using his life as a bar owner to tell a personal story. Based on the list I have, this is his fourth or fifth book and they are all tied to his younger days as a Bar owner. Some have included magical reality but South, West is a slice of life that can only have a hint of fantasy. Of this original group, this is the best story and probably represents the one he’s been trying to tell since the beginning. The topics of this book are for adults as well as some situations. I can’t wait to read more about Murakami.
Unusual in many of Murakami’s works, the narrator and main character is named Hajima. In Japanese, this word means Start. Hajima started out as something of an anomaly in his generation, an only child. We were told that only children are supposed to be self-centered and worse. As he grows up, he will object and resent being stereotyped but he will also tend to behave in stereotypes.
I read this book because I like Murakami books and Japanese novels in general. However, having read ‘Colorless Tskaru Tazaki’ before, before reading this book, I found that I couldn’t tell the two stories apart, because they were so similar. Both main characters move to Tokyo and both swim in the morning. There’s a lot of talk about their favorite records and past girlfriends, as well as how they distanced themselves from family and friends in the past, and more. I feel that I am reading the same book twice.
