Walt’s responsibility, Lucian Connally. Walt doesn’t recognize the mysterious woman, but she seems to know him and claims there’s something she has to get back to Connally.

With his daughter, Cady, and Philadelphia police chief Vic Moretti for the holidays, Walt is at his leisure, and despite the woman’s reluctance to reveal his identity, he agrees meant to help her. At Durant’s Life Support, Lucian Connally had several falls into his Pappy Van Winkle store and swore he had never laid eyes on this woman before. Frustrated, she whispers “Steam Train” and begins the story that takes them back to Christmas Eve 1988, when three people died in a horrible crash and a young girl had a slim chance of survival. most… back to the record blizzard, to Walt’s first year as sheriff, with a young daughter at home and a wife praying for his safety.. It’s Christmas present, and Sheriff Walt Longmire is sitting in his office reading Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. His secretary tells him that he has a guest, who turns out to be an Asian woman carrying a bag of clothes, her voice a little wheezing and frustrated that he doesn’t know her. She inquired about the previous sheriff, who is currently at the local nursing home, so Longmire took her to see him. The rest is history, as they say.

When Longmire first assumed the position of sheriff, the previous sheriff, Lucian Connally, was playing poker and drinking. On that distant Christmas Eve, a traffic accident and storm of the century coincide, leaving a young girl fighting for her life, a life that can only be saved by taking her to facilities in Denver. No aircraft other than an old WWII bomber has been salvaged and repurposed as a farm plane, and no pilot other than Lucian Connally is playing poker (also an airplane bombing during World War II). Longmire finds Connally at a local bar and offers him coffee and a challenge he can’t refuse. Later, Longmire joined Connally and the others on a thrilling flight to Denver.

The descriptions of the plane ride were intense, and I found myself routing the plane in the middle of danger, even though of course, I knew the trip was a success. How else will the Christmas present be played out? And, as a reader of the series, I know that Longmire survived that plane ride. However, the challenges that take place during the trip are extremely serious, causing the book to be classified as “thriller”. Longmire’s strong personality is evident in this novel, and the story provides the foundation for his work as sheriff today.

Spirit of Steamboat is a great story. I found it really interesting even though I know everyone survived, as the character Walt Longmire is recounting something that happened in the past! I was going to try to finish the book but I couldn’t put it down in the end. I felt it was a very uplifting story and was both happy and sad when I finished reading it; sad because I read it too quickly and it’s over. I will re-read it just like with all my Walt Longmire books. If you’re a Longmire fan (or even if you haven’t read one of these books before) & you haven’t read this book, I highly recommend it.
