This is a collection of short stories from Aaronovitch’s wonderful Rivers of London, a series that blends urban fantasy and detective work. I love the series. I enjoyed spending more time with the characters while reading this anthology. However, I don’t think it’s the best introduction to Rivers of London. My pre-existing fondness for the characters is part of the reason why I love these stories. Also, I think new readers might be a bit confused on how to set it up. I strongly recommend starting with the first novel instead, variously titled “Midnight Riots” and “London Rivers”.

The first half of the book consists of stories narrated by Peter Grant, the main character of the series. The second half contains stories from the perspective of the supporting cast. My favorite Peter Grant story is “The Cockpit” — it’s hard for me not to love a Peter Grant story that focuses on bookstores and reading. My favorite story among the rest is “Favorite Uncle”, a story that makes me love Abigail even more than before, Abigail is a high school student who has found her way to position as an apprentice magic practitioner. Except for “A dedicated fashionista”, I liked every story. I want to have more. Highly recommended for Rivers of London fans. For those who are not yet fans, I repeat my recommendation to start the series at book one.
