Tecumseh and the Prophet – Free Full Audiobook
Tecumseh and the Prophet is a beautiful book by author Peter Cozzens.
The first biography of the great Shawnee leader in over 20 years.
The first makes it clear that his misunderstood younger brother, Tenskwatawa, was an equal partner in the last great Indian alliance against the United States.
Until the Americans killed Tecumseh in 1813, he and his brother Tenskwatawa were the co-architects of the most extensive Indian alliance in American history. In previous accounts of Tecumseh’s life, Tenskwatawa was seen as an incompetent quack and a drunkard. But award-winning historian Peter Cozzens now shows us that while Tecumseh was a brilliant diplomat and war leader – admired by the very white Americans he opposed – Tenskwatawa, known as the “Shawnee Prophet”, who created an important doctrine of religion and culture. the revival unifies the various tribes of the Old Northwest. The detailed study of Native American society and customs provides a window into a world often erased from history and reveals how both men came to power in different but not so different ways. less important.
The Cozzens bring us to the forefront of the chaos and violence that characterizes the fledgling American Republic, as settlers flood through Appalachia to bloody consequences in their haste to exploit the lands acquired from the British during the War of Independence, disregarding their rightful Indian owners. Tecumseh and the Prophet present the untold story of the Shawnee brothers who responded to this threat – the two most important siblings in Native American history, whom the Cozzens help us understand , should be inscribed in the annals of America.
Peter Cozzens brings new depth to the lives of Tecumseh and his brother with this work. He correctly points out that Tecumseh’s other biographies tend to focus primarily on the famous chief while downplaying his brother to a supporting role. Having recently read Tecumseh: A life by John Sugden, I have the feeling that the oracle had become irrelevant before the War of 1812. This book shows how that was not true, and despite it. focuses on both brothers, but tells a fuller story of their pan-India movement that began as a religion, then evolved to include political and military goals. For me, it was interesting to learn more about the prophet after the Battle of Tippecanoe: his continued role in the Indian confederacy, and his style gradually falling into darkness following the death of his brother. Some of the finer points about Tecumseh are also explored in greater detail: in particular, his belief in his brother’s connection to great spirits and their relationship during the move.
This is a very well researched book about the famous Shawnee leader Tecumseh and his brother the mystical Tenskwatasa.
While the book’s thesis is that the younger brother is just as important as Tecumseh, the book doesn’t really make the cases as Tecumseh is by far the more interesting character and the introductions to him are rather superior. outnumbered the parts about his brother.
But definitely recommended to anyone interested in early American history and Native American history.
