The Barren Grounds/The Misewa Saga, Book One – Audiobook Online

Narnia meets traditional Indigenous stories of the sky and constellations in an epic high school fantasy series by award-winning author David Robertson.

Morgan and Eli, two indigenous children forced away from family and community, were brought together in a foster home in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Each of them feels disconnected, from their own culture and from each other, and struggles to fit in at school and in their new home – until they find a secret, hidden place. Enclosed wall in an unfinished attic bedroom.

A portal opens to another reality, Askí, which transports them to barren, frozen lands, where they meet Ochek (Fisher). The only hunter to support his starving community, Misewa, Ochek welcomes the human children, teaching them the traditional ways of survival. But when the need for food becomes desperate, they embark on a dangerous mission.

Accompanied by Arik, a Sassy Squirrel they caught stealing from a trap, they try to save Misewa before the cold of winter freezes everything – including them.

Having taught The Chronicles of Narnia throughout my career, I am extremely pleased to see the successor to these books. Modern yet deeply immersed in local traditions, this first book has me excited to read the rest, and even more excited for the generation of students and teachers who have lost themselves in this world. .
