The Bonfire of the Vanities – Audiobook Online

This hilarious American satire will forever define late-twentieth-century New York style.

Tom Wolfe’s best-selling modern classic tells the story of Sherman McCoy, an elite Wall Street bond trader who has it all: wealth, power, prestige, an apartment in Park Avenue, a beautiful wife and an even prettier mistress, until one wrong turn. Sherman slid down a spiral in a humiliating fall from grace.

A car crash in the Bronx involving Sherman, his girlfriend, and two lower-class Black youths set off a match with explosive racial and social tensions in New City. York in the 1980s. Suddenly, Sherman found himself embroiled in the most notorious, brutal case of the year, as prosecutors, politicians, the press, the police, the clergy and all sorts of hustle and bustle. rushed in to further their political and social agendas. With so many egos at stake, the ultimate priority on anyone’s mind is truth or justice.

It’s amazing when a great book is read by a talented storyteller. The book is an excellent parody of the ’80s and Joe Barrett is one of the best storytellers I’ve ever heard. He pronounces each character so clearly that it’s sometimes hard to believe it’s the same man. One of the best recorded performances I’ve ever heard and as soon as I finish this review I’ll see what else he narrates and buy them all.
