Part H Is for Hawk, part The Soul of an Octopus, The Book of Eels is both a meditation on the world’s most elusive fish – the eel – and a reflection on the human condition.

Notably, very little is known about the European eel, Anguilla anguilla. In fact, few scientists and philosophers for centuries have been obsessed with what has come to be known as the “eel question”: Where do eels come from? Who are they? Are they fish or some other kind of creature altogether? Even today, in an age of advanced science, no one has ever seen eels mate or give birth, and we still don’t understand what motivated them, after living for decades in fresh water, to finally come back. swim a great distance about the ocean of their lives. They are still a mystery.

Drawing on his extensive study of eels in literature, history and modern marine biology, as well as his own experience of eel fishing with his father, Patrik Svensson has created a mesmerizing portrait of a unusual animals, completely misunderstood and utterly captivating. In The Book of Eels, we meet famous historical thinkers, from Aristotle to Sigmund Freud to Rachel Carson, whose only obsession is eels. And we meet scientists at the forefront of the search for the origins of eels, including Danish marine biologist Johannes Schmidt, who spearheaded research efforts in the early 20th century, starting thousands upon thousands of eels, in the hope of proving their habitat in the Sargasso Sea.

Blending the best of memoirs and nature writing, Svensson’s exploration of eels becomes an exploration of the human condition, delving into the overarching issues of their origins and destiny. us, both as humans and as animals, and ultimately how to solve the greatest question of all: death. The result is an engaging and smooth story that will surprise and fascinate.

I loved this book for its insight into the author’s psyche as well as the hard facts about the species. He is a wonderful writer and his love for his father, as well as the natural world, made the book possible. A pleasure to hear.
