It was early February 1799, a year of war.

Sailing in the Caribbean, Captain Alan Lewrie, Royal Navy, is once again in pursuit of a chimera. A wealthy French prize ship he anchored in Dominica went missing along with six of his crew.

What begins as a simple search for it, and they, from Hispaniola to Barbados, as far as the Antilles, lead Lewrie to a gruesome discovery on the Dry Tortugas and to a vile gang of depraved pirates and the most ruthless to ever sail under “Jolly Roger,” and the suspicion that one of his trusted hands might be the worst of all.

Against his will – again – the often irresistible Lewrie has once again become his superior’s “cat-paw”, and his secret mission this time is to travel upstream of the Mississippi in Louisiana. Enemy-held Spain heads to the romantic but dirty port of New Orleans in search of pirates and prizes, where one misstep could betray Lewrie and his small group as the pirates. spy. Deception, betrayal and death lurks ‘every corner of Vieux Carre, and it’s up to Lewrie’s quick but skeptical wits to claim their day of survival, while also making it happen. a very personal revenge for his enemies.

This is my second time reading this book. The first time was a few years ago, so it took me a while to realize that I was re-reading it. This time I enjoyed it as much as the last time. Dewey lambdin writes a good sea story and is a pretty fair guy even when the action takes place on land. This is a book I can recommend to anyone interested in reading about this.
