The City of Brass
- A Novel, By: S. A. Chakraborty
- Narrated by: Soneela Nankani
- Series: The Daevabad Trilogy, Book 1
Entering the City of Brass, S. A. Chakraborty’s mesmerizing debut is perfect for fans of The Golem and the Jinni, The Grace of Kings, and Uprooted, in which the future of a magical Middle Eastern kingdom lies. in the hands of a smart and defiant young trickster with magical healing gifts.
Nahri has never believed in magic. Sure, she has power; On the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she is a con man of remarkable talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to earn – palm readings, zars and a mysterious gift for healing – are both a trick and a means to an end. The fun of the rogue Ottoman aristocrats was both a reliable way to survive.
But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, dark djinn warrior, to her side in one of her flaws, she is forced to reconsider her beliefs. For Dara told Nahri an extraordinary story: across hot, windy sands filled with fire creatures and rivers where mythical marid slumbered, the past ruins of once magnificent metropolises A time of man and mountains where birds of prey circle more than they ever imagined, lies Daevabad, the legendary brass city – the city to which Nahri is unalterably attached.
In Daevabad, within the enchanted gilded bronze walls and behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments still linger. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, her arrival threatens to spark a war that has been simmering for centuries. Rejecting Dara’s warnings of treachery around her, she begins a hesitant friendship with Alizayd, an idealistic prince who dreams of revolutionizing his father’s corrupt regime. Not long after, Nahri learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic could not protect her from the dangerous web of the political court. That even the smartest plan can have deadly consequences.
After all, there’s a reason they say be careful what you wish for….
This book has some sublime elements. However, the second half culminated with an incoherent mess. When it came to the ending, I didn’t want any more so I let it go. Lots of potential here but it never came together.
